Frequently Asked Questions
Is my dog ready for advanced training?
Your dog may be ready if it understands foundational commands but becomes inconsistent when distractions, distance, or duration increase. Advanced training builds on existing obedience rather than replacing it.
A free phone consultation can help you determine whether an advanced or foundational program may be more appropriate.
How long does advanced training take?
Timelines vary by program. Elite Obedience includes eight private lessons over eight weeks, while the standard Board & Train program lasts two weeks.
Dogs with high reactivity or significant anxiety may qualify for the three-week, on-leash Reactivity Board & Train. The appropriate duration depends on the selected program and the dog’s needs.
Do you serve Herndon from your Sterling location?
Yes. Off Leash K9 Training, Loudoun County is based in Sterling and lists Herndon within its service area.
Board & Train dogs board with a professional trainer. Private lessons and other options may be available at different locations depending on the program and current scheduling availability.
What advanced commands will my dog learn?
Commands depend on the program. Elite Obedience lists extended-distance obedience, heel, watch, through, front, and stand.
The 2-Week Board & Train lists sit, place, off-leash heel, down, down from a distance, off, and full off-leash recall. Review the current program curriculum before enrolling.
Is e-collar training included in every program?
No. Elite Obedience and the standard 2-Week Board & Train currently include an e-collar.
Basic Marker Mastery uses reward-based training methods and includes a clicker, slip lead, and 15-foot leash. Ask the team to explain the methods and equipment associated with any program you are considering.
What happens after advanced training is complete?
Elite Obedience owners participate directly throughout their private lessons. The 2-Week Board & Train includes a two-hour owner transfer session and Free Refresher for Life support.
Regardless of the program, consistent practice at home is essential for maintaining the dog’s skills.
Can older dogs learn advanced skills?
Dogs of different ages may be able to learn advanced skills when they have an appropriate foundation. Age, health, temperament, training history, and physical ability should be considered when selecting goals and a program.
