Frequently Asked Questions
How long are private training sessions?
Private training sessions are generally about one hour, although the exact format can depend on the program and the dog. Owners also need to practice the skills introduced during training between scheduled sessions.
Can private training take place at my Herndon home?
Private lesson locations may vary depending on the selected program and current scheduling availability. Confirm whether an in-home, facility-based, or other arrangement is available when speaking with the Sterling team.
What age can dogs start private lessons?
Puppies can begin age-appropriate training early, but eligibility varies by program. The current Puppy Board & Train requires puppies to be at least 12 weeks old.
The current Plans & Pricing page does not publish a universal minimum age for Basic Marker Mastery™ or a general e-collar age requirement. Confirm the appropriate starting option and equipment with the Sterling team.
How many sessions will my dog need?
Current lesson counts depend on the program. Elite Obedience includes eight private lessons over eight weeks, Aggressive Dog Training is an eight-week, eight-lesson program, and Basic Marker Mastery™ includes eight one-hour sessions.
The appropriate option depends on your dog’s behavior, training history, and goals.
Is training equipment provided?
Equipment varies by program. Elite Obedience currently includes an e-collar and a 15-foot leash. Basic Marker Mastery™ includes a 15-foot leash, clicker, and slip lead and does not use an e-collar or prong collar.
Review the current Plans & Pricing page or confirm program-specific equipment with the Sterling team before starting.
What should I do between training sessions?
Practice the skills and handling techniques introduced during your lessons. Consistent repetition helps reinforce what your dog is learning and allows you to build better communication between appointments.
Does private training work for dogs with aggression?
The current Aggressive Dog Training program is designed for dogs with aggression or reactivity around other dogs. Dogs with high reactivity toward people or other dogs, or significant anxiety, may require a different program recommendation.
Training can help owners improve control and management, but complete correction of serious aggression cannot be guaranteed. Results depend on the dog’s history, triggers, environment, and owner follow-through.
